Loft storage for your home in Tooting
Could you do it yourself?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Loft storage in Tooting: what you get
A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. For a home in Tooting, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and wasted space behind the knee walls.
A large share of the homes around Tooting were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. That’s where fitted storage comes in, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting day works
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway. Tell us about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- We send a quote in writing.
- We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.
Preparing the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

What prompts loft storage in Tooting
Many people get in touch once their loft conversion is complete. The room is there, but the furniture to fit it isn’t. Fitted storage finishes the room.
Loft storage can help with:
- Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
- An empty dormer that could hold shelves
- Boxes and suitcases with no home
- Boxes piled on loft boards
If you live in a period home close to St Augustine, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Questions from Tooting
How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Tooting?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Tooting?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How long is the fitting for eaves storage?
The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
What it costs
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How square the room is
- How many doors and drawers there are
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
Helping us understand the room
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- The type of home and how the room is reached
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Loft storage in Tooting: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Tooting were built before 1919 (about 64%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Totterdown Fields Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Tooting. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If you live near Wandle Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. Living in a block of flats near Tooting station? Then eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
