Built-in bookshelves in Turnpike Lane
How we make built-in bookshelves for Turnpike Lane
We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Haringey and the rest of London. People typically come to us about bowing shelves in an old bookcase and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Turnpike Lane built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and on a wall that is not straight the gaps show. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What else we make in Turnpike Lane
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
My home in Turnpike Lane is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Built-in bookshelves are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you cover homes near Hornsey station?
Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, and a mix often works best. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.
Can bookshelves go around a door?
Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused and can frame a window seat.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.
How it’s made
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and strong, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. You can paint the edge or show the layers.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later, and it suits a traditional room.
How fitting day works
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

- We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

How we price built-in bookshelves
The price for your room depends on:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The width and height of the space
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- The type of home and how the room is reached
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.
