Bespoke kitchens in Turnpike Lane

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. People typically come to us about room for everything in the kitchen and a dresser that suits a period house, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Wall cabinets need firm fixings, and older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick. With a large share of the homes around Turnpike Lane dating from then, we check each wall before wall cabinets are planned. If a wall can’t take wall cabinets, tall larders or a dresser standing on the floor can do the job.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Turnpike Lane

About 66% of the homes in the streets around Turnpike Lane went up before 1919, and about 15% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 9 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Turnpike Lane. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Haringey has its own. If your road in Turnpike Lane falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

For a family home near North Harringay Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Bruce Castle, about 1.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Make sure an island won’t crowd the room
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

Talk to your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer early. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

How it is made

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Larder and dresser units

A larder gives tall storage for food and small appliances, sized to what you store.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Larders, dressers and tall cupboards are hard to find in standard sizes that suit an older room. We can build them to fit, painted to match the rest of the kitchen. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.

Before fitting day

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Is Turnpike Lane in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes. Turnpike Lane is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Haringey and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Turnpike Lane?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we measure for it during the design visit. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts.
