Fitted wardrobes in Turnpike Lane, Haringey
Planning fitted wardrobes for a home in Turnpike Lane? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Too little room for clothes
Fitted wardrobes in Turnpike Lane
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Fitted wardrobes in Turnpike Lane
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls, which helps keep mould away. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. People usually come to us about too little room for clothes and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around Turnpike Lane are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- We send a written quote.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
How to get a quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Turnpike Lane
I live in a flat in Turnpike Lane. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you cover homes near Hornsey station?
Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

What it costs
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- How square the room is
- How big the furniture is
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
Getting in touch
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Examples of the look you are after
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.
What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting.
Doors and drawer fronts
Where there’s room to open them, hinged doors give full access. Sliding doors suit narrow rooms.
Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with its own mix of hanging, shelves and drawers.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Not enough hanging space
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John The Baptist (greek Orthodox), a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
What to check before you book
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Have they thought about parking near you?
Fitted wardrobes in Turnpike Lane: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 66% of the housing in the streets around Turnpike Lane, with about 15% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Turnpike Lane, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 28% of households in the streets around Turnpike Lane, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
Bruce Castle, about 1.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Close to Ducketts Common? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
