How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Built-in bookshelves in West Heath

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. Most enquiries start with books with nowhere left to go and empty alcoves that could hold books, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around West Heath, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Is bespoke worth it?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Built-in bookshelves in West Heath: local notes

About 73% of the homes in the area around West Heath went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There’s a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Heath, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Bexley are set locally. Depending on your street in West Heath, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

If your children go to Hillsgrove Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live near Lesnes Abbey Woods, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Room for a record collection
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • A home library or study

Danson House, about 1.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Abbey Wood station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West Heath?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall. If a wall is not suitable, we’ll tell you.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Tips worth knowing

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Tell us where the heaviest things will go

Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along, so the paint is not scuffed.

Store the heaviest items low down and use a step rather than the shelves to reach up.
