Addington Loft Storage

Thinking about loft storage in Addington? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

Loft storage designed for your room

Loft storage in Addington: what you get

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, all made for the shape of the room. In Addington, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a loft room that still feels unfinished and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised.

Some homes from the 1950s and 1960s have original built-in cupboards on the landing or in the hall, which can be rebuilt with better shelves and doors. Many homes around Addington date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so those spaces are worth a look. The new storage is made to the opening and fixed to suit the wall.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Altering the structure of the loft
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It goes into the carcasses, the drawers and the shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers that pull out make the eaves easy to use. You see everything at once. They’re designed around any access points behind the knee wall.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a post-war house, the hall and stairs are typically straight and simple, which helps when the sections come in. The way in is still measured, along with the room. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft, whether it’s a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any of it.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

Starting with a design visit

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Your questions about loft storage in Addington

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Addington?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Wickham station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It uses the full height of the room. We will work out the layout when we visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Fitted storage in Addington

The biggest share of homes in the neighbourhood around Addington, about 96%, were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Addington include Church of St Mary Addington (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Flint Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 40% of households in the neighbourhood around Addington live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For families living near Applegarth Academy, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Do you need loft storage in Addington?

A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Storage in the eaves leaves the main floor clear.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A dormer that is not being used
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope

Living in a block of flats near West Wickham station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
