Under-stairs storage for homes in Arnos Grove

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Arnos Grove combine the two. Typical reasons to get in touch are coats and shoes piling up in the hall and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With a large share of homes around Arnos Grove built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

A hallway full of shoes and coats is a common reason to get in touch. With a rail, hooks and shoe drawers under the stairs, the hall stays clear, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out

Close to Broomfield Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What affects the price in Arnos Grove

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Before the design visit

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Making use of awkward spaces in Arnos Grove

About 46% of the homes in the area around Arnos Grove went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Arnos Grove, Historic England’s list includes Arnos Grove Underground Station (Grade II*), under half a mile west, and Broomfield House Broomfield Park (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Enfield is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Arnos Grove fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

For a flat near New Southgate station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Syro-Malabar Catholic Church of London, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Arnos Grove?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

My home in Arnos Grove is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later, which helps in a well-used hall.

Pull-out drawers

Some pull-outs are tall, with a rail for coats or room for a vacuum. Lower drawers suit shoes, bags and boxes. We plan the mix during the design visit.

Why bespoke in Arnos Grove?

Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First you let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop.
  5. The storage is fitted in your home and checked, drawer by drawer.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
