TV and media units in Arnos Grove: what you get

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you prefer. We work across London, including Arnos Grove. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves beside the TV and a TV that looks out of place in the room; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Arnos Grove, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age usually have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Do you need TV and media units in Arnos Grove?

Open-plan living is another reason. A built-in unit gives that wall order.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers
  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Leads that show from every angle

Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers keep controllers and games tidy. Fronts are painted to match the unit.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that aren’t straight.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Arnos Grove homes and TV and media units

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Arnos Grove were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Arnos Grove. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Arnos Grove joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Arnos Grove Underground Station, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Bowes Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

Common questions about TV and media units

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Arnos Grove?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Arnos Grove?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Do you cover Arnos Grove?

Yes. Arnos Grove is part of the area we cover. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
