How we make fitted wardrobes for Arnos Grove
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Arnos Grove date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- How big the furniture is
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How square the room is
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
Getting in touch
Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Bedrooms in Arnos Grove: local notes
About 46% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Arnos Grove went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Arnos Grove. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The share of homes built before 1919 around Arnos Grove, about 46%, is well above the figure for Enfield as a whole, about 23%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Close to Broomfield Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.
Questions from Arnos Grove
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Arnos Grove?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Arnos Grove?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. The slope is measured at the measuring visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.
Do you work outside London?
No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Arnos Grove
An tricky room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Arnos Grove Underground Station, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Whether they measure the room themselves
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.
- You get in touch and let us know about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.
Before we arrive
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
