The problems fitted cupboards solve
Standard cupboards don’t sit well in many period homes. Uneven floors and walls that are not square leave gaps at the sides and top that collect dust and look untidy. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.
Fitted cupboards can help with:
- Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
- Storage for towels and bedding
- A cupboard for the meters with easy access
- Using the full height of a room
If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.
What to check before you book

Fitted cupboards in Bromley Common: what you get
Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If your home has landing shelves for bedding and towels and using the full height of a room, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and so do the awkward corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch with a few details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
- We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
- A written quote is sent to you.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
How to get a quote
To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
- Think about what each cupboard will hold
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you, so the space keeps working.
Keep boilers, meters and fuse boards in mind from the start. They shape the design, and it’s easiest to plan for them at the start.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Fitted storage in Bromley Common
In the streets around Bromley Common, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%) and before 1919 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Bromley is no exception. Questions we’re often asked
I live near Bickley station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bromley Common?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
What are your cupboards made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

What else we make in Bromley Common
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
