Fitted cupboards for your home in Penge

Do you need fitted cupboards in Penge?

When a house gains a utility or boot room, people want it fitted out properly. Washing machines, dryers, coats, boots and cleaning things all need a place, and fitted cupboards can bring order to them.

Here’s what fitted cupboards can help with:

  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes

For a family home near Harris Primary Academy Crystal Palace, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

How to choose a carpenter in London

How we make fitted cupboards for Penge

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. Typical reasons to get in touch are built-in storage that matches the woodwork and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace normally has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Penge were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Where space is tight, we plan how each door swings, so nothing blocks the way.

Shelves

A shelf that sags looks tired quickly, so we size each one for its span and load.

Storage in Penge homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Penge were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 12 entries within half a mile of the centre of Penge. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 23% of households in the neighbourhood around Penge, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The White House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live near Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Penge

Does a conservation area in or near Penge affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Penge West station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How long does fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Any gas work around the boiler

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
