The problems fitted cupboards solve

When a house gains a utility or boot room, people want it fitted out properly. Washing machines, dryers, coats, boots and cleaning things all need a place, and a run of fitted cupboards can hold them neatly.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots

Close to Coney Hall Recreation Ground? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Fitted cupboards in Hayes: what you get

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about landing shelves for bedding and towels and tall cupboards where space is short.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Hayes, it’s worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hayes (Kent) station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hayes?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and make sure an engineer can reach it.

How long does fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through at the design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap at the side or a space above. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, so less space goes to waste. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Hayes

What you pay depends on:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

What to send when you contact us

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Arranging a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Storage in Hayes homes: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 72% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hayes, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hayes include The Rectory (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south, and Hayes Grove Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Hayes is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If your children go to Hawes Down Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For an older house near St Mary the Virgin, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.
