Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Fitted cupboards in Bushey Mead

Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors often slope. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. If your home has a neat cupboard around the boiler and using the full height of a room, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Bushey Mead, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They are not much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly

Close to Cannon Hill Common? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Most painted cupboard doors we make are moisture-resistant MDF, because it is stable and smooth.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors on a meter or fuse board cupboard need to open easily for engineers and meter readers.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bushey Mead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Bushey Mead?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London, and Bushey Mead is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Bushey Mead homes and fitted cupboards

In the area around Bushey Mead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 39%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Bushey Mead include Methodist Church (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Cote Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Bushey Mead joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

For an older house near Dundonald Church, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. For a family home near Joseph Hood Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Do not store things against the boiler

A boiler cupboard should be left as it was designed, with nothing stored against the boiler or over its vents. The doors open wide for servicing, so the engineer can reach the boiler.

It is useful to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, so it helps to know this early.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and talk through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
