Fitted cupboards in Wimbledon

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Make a note of what needs a home

Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you as your storage changes.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, particularly on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

About our fitted cupboards in Wimbledon

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about cupboards that suit a period house and a neat cupboard around the boiler.

Wherever your home in Wimbledon sits in London’s mix of housing, there is typically a space that could work harder. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap at the side or a space above. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, so less space goes to waste. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Wimbledon

My home in Wimbledon is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near Wimbledon station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, and the doors open fully for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the job. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in. It helps to let us know about parking then, as a van usually needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The sections are carried in, joined and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Fitted cupboards in Wimbledon: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Wimbledon were built before 1919 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Wimbledon, Historic England’s list includes Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and The Old Rectory House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Around Wimbledon, about 44% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Merton as a whole, about 27%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

If you live in a period home close to St. Mark's Church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Close to Cannizaro Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Southside House, about 1.1 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Wimbledon is part of the London Borough of Merton. Whether your home in Wimbledon is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Wimbledon is one of the places in Merton where we make fitted cupboards, and the borough has 20 places on our list.

Design visits and fitting in SW19, SW20, SW17 and SW18 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You will find streets here like High Street Mews, High Street and Church Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted cupboards. Wimbledon sits close to the A218 and B235. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted cupboards include Crooked Billet (1 mile west), Wimbledon Park (1 mile north), Wimbledon Chase (1 mile south), Copse Hill (1 mile south-west) and Merton Park (1 mile south-east). Other parts of Merton we cover include Colliers Wood (2 miles east), Morden (2 miles south), Eastfields (3 miles south-east), Merton Abbey (2 miles south-east), Mitcham (3 miles south-east) and Hackbridge (3 miles south-east). Wimbledon is one of the larger places we cover in Merton.
