Fitted cupboards for homes in Furzedown
Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If your home has using the full height of a room and cupboards that suit a period house, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Around Furzedown, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of awkward spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Fitted cupboards in Furzedown: local notes
In the streets around Furzedown, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Streatham Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Furzedown. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Furzedown will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know about parking near your home at the design visit.
Kingswood House, about 2.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Near listed buildings like Furzedown House, less than half a mile west of the centre of Furzedown, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Figge's Marsh, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

How we price fitted cupboards
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The width and height of the space
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Spray painting or hand painting
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
Getting in touch
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Examples of the look you are after
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Your postcode and the borough
- The type of home and how the room is reached
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.
What fitted cupboards can’t fix
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
- Electrical work inside the cupboard
- Connecting appliances to water or waste
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
Materials and parts
- Spray-painted finish
- Ventilated doors
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Adjustable shelves
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Furzedown?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Furzedown?
Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Furzedown included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
How long will the cupboards take to fit?
Every job is different. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
How fitting works for fitted cupboards
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
- At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
- The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
