Common questions about fitted cupboards

Is Copse Hill in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London, and Copse Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

About our fitted cupboards in Copse Hill

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, such as by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly, while keeping them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. If your home has hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and a utility room with proper storage, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Copse Hill, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • Building work or structural changes
  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Ventilated doors

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting in the room lets the cupboards match the surrounding woodwork and makes later touch-ups easy.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim the edge of each cupboard to follow the wall for a close fit.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Let us know about parking during the design visit
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early

New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, and knowing this early saves changes later.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Storage in Copse Hill homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Copse Hill were built before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Copse Hill is partly covered by the Wimbledon West Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 51% of households in the neighbourhood around Copse Hill live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Living in a block of flats near Raynes Park station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Near listed buildings like Southside House, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Copse Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For an older house near Christ Church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Copse Hill is in the London Borough of Merton, about 1 mile north-east of Wimbledon. Whether your home in Copse Hill is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Merton, large and small.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. A fitted cupboard is part of the room, and it’s made for this home rather than the next one. How long you’ll stay is worth weighing up. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
