About our fitted cupboards in Hornsey
We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in the colour you choose. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and making use of an awkward alcove or corner.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are usually solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Hornsey date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Fitting day, step by step
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- We visit to measure up and go through the design.
- You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
- The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.
How to prepare
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Hornsey
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hornsey?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
My house in Hornsey is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away and still leaves them reachable. We don’t move meters or fuse boards; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Mention any parking or lift rules
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you, so the space keeps working.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it’s worth doing before the design is agreed.
Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Shelves that carry weight need a strong board, and birch plywood helps. Span, depth and load all matter.
Plinths and scribe strips
We use a plinth to set the cupboard level on an uneven floor. Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall.
