DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Fitted cupboards in Seven Sisters: what you get
Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, and we leave room for their work in the design. If your home has a utility room with proper storage and cupboards that suit a period house, fitted cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
With a large share of homes around Seven Sisters built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You get in touch and tell us where the cupboards should go. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
- We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
- We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Storage in Seven Sisters homes: local notes
About 54% of the homes in the streets around Seven Sisters went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Seven Sisters is within about a quarter of a mile of the Seven Sisters and Page Green, Tottenham High Road Hist Corr Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Haringey is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Seven Sisters. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
For an older house near Church of Holy Trinity, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. Bruce Castle, about 1.2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
There’s a place for both. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. For tricky spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Questions we are often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Seven Sisters?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Seven Sisters?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.
Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?
Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That’s one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What prompts fitted cupboards in Seven Sisters
The usual reason is simple: there’s too much stuff and not enough storage. Coats end up over the banister and shoes spread across the hall. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and clears the floor.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Cupboards that suit a period house
- Landing shelves for bedding and towels
- A utility room with proper storage
- Using the full height of a room
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Bartholomew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
What affects the price in Seven Sisters
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Parking near your home
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The overall size of the piece
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What we need to know
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- How you want to use the space
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Where you live, with the postcode
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
