Fitted cupboards for homes in Turnpike Lane

The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and a neat cupboard around the boiler, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around Turnpike Lane date from then. Fitted cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Turnpike Lane in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. Turnpike Lane is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Haringey and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hornsey station?

Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we have seen the space. To get started, get in touch through our contact form.

Fitted cupboards in Turnpike Lane: local notes

Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 1.5 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. For an older house near Church of St John The Baptist (greek Orthodox), hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Close to Ducketts Common? How we price fitted cupboards

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the cupboards.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap at the side or a space above. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, which can add a good deal of storage. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
