Fitted cupboards in Tottenham Green: what you get

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no awkward gaps. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. If your home has cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving and using the full height of a room, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Tottenham Green, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. You get a written quote for the cupboards we have agreed.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

How we price fitted cupboards

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Getting in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Storage in Tottenham Green homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the streets around Tottenham Green, with about 19% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 20 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Tottenham Green. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If you live on or close to a main road in Tottenham Green, let us know during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Ann, about 0.6 miles south-west of the centre of Tottenham Green, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Seven Sisters station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Chestnuts Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Many off-the-shelf units use chipboard with a printed surface. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, finished to suit the room. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why us?

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Tottenham Green?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

A boiler cupboard should be left as it was designed, with nothing stored against the boiler or over its vents. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on your lease, but it is worth doing before the design is agreed.
