Fitted home offices in Crouch End, Haringey
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted home offices in Crouch End starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- An awkward space with no furniture that fits
- Cables trailing across the desk and floor
- Shelving that bows under the load

How we price fitted home offices
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- The overall size of the piece
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
What to send when you get in touch
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- How you want to use the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
About our fitted home offices in Crouch End
Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We will suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. We look at it early during the design visit in Crouch End. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room and paperwork and files with nowhere to go.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Crouch End are that age. That leaves room for shelving above a desk right up to the picture rail or cornice. Lath-and-plaster walls need suitable fixings, especially for loaded shelves, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

The problems fitted home offices solve
An alcove, a landing or a space under the eaves can often take a desk. Standard desks seldom fit an alcove or a slope. A desk made for the space puts it to good use.
Requests we hear often include:
- A tangle of chargers and leads
- A desk in the wrong light
- No way to put work away
- Shelves that sag under books and files
If you live in a flat close to Crouch Hill station, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Will the quote be in writing?
Crouch End homes and fitted home offices
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Crouch End were built before 1919 (about 56%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Crouch End is in the Crouch End Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Haringey has its own. Where a street in Crouch End is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
If your children go to Rokesly Infant & Nursery School or a school nearby, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework. For an older house near Christ Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.
Crouch End is about 3 miles north-east of Tottenham, part of the London Borough of Haringey. Whether your home in Crouch End is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. In N8, N19 and N4, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Close by, we also work in Hornsey (1 mile north-east), Stroud Green (1 mile east), Turnpike Lane (1 mile north-east), Highgate (1 mile south-west) and Upper Holloway (1 mile south). Elsewhere in Haringey, we also cover Tottenham (3 miles north-east), Tottenham Green (2 miles east), South Tottenham (2 miles east), Seven Sisters (2 miles east), Bowes Park (2 miles north) and Bounds Green (2 miles north). Crouch End is one of the larger places we cover in Haringey.
Around Crouch End

What we don’t do
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts
- Turning an unconverted loft into a room
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Filing drawers
- Birch plywood
- Cable routes
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Built-in desks
Tips worth knowing
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Think about where the sockets are now
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Think about what will sit on the shelves
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. We’ll show you the cable routes and how they’re meant to be used. That way, you can start work straight away.
Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us.
FAQs: fitted home offices in Crouch End
I live near Crouch Hill station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
In many homes, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We will check the size at the design visit.
Can a home office go in a loft room?
Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.
How long is the fitting for a home office?
How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
Fitting day, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.
