Your questions about fitted cupboards in Earl's Court

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Brompton station?

Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Does a conservation area in or near Earl's Court affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

What are your cupboards made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in a colour you choose.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes, that is part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

Fitted cupboards in Earl's Court: what you get

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are using the full height of a room and storage for towels and bedding.

With a large share of homes around Earl's Court built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Most painted cupboard doors we make are moisture-resistant MDF, because it is stable and smooth.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in an older house. You choose the paint colour.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You contact us about fitted cupboards.
  2. We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, joined and set level. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Storage in Earl's Court homes: local notes

About 72% of the homes in the area around Earl's Court went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Nevern Square Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Earl's Court. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Earl's Court will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know about parking near your home at the design visit.

If you live near Gwendwr Garden, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a period home close to St Cuthbert's, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Earl's Court

A new utility room or boot room often prompts the call. There are appliances, coats, boots and cleaning things to fit in, and fitted cupboards can bring order to them.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • Using the full height of a room
  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving

Near listed buildings like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, under half a mile west of the centre of Earl's Court, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Pricing fitted cupboards in Earl's Court

What you pay depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Helping us understand the room

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and typically cost less, and in a square room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Why choose us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Work across the whole of London
