How we make wall beds for Earl's Court
Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage built around a fold-down bed and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Earl's Court, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.
Before we arrive
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Starting with a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Flats, leases and landlords
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
What we do not do
Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Decorating around the cabinet
- Supplying mattresses
- Getting consent under your lease
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bedrooms in Earl's Court: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Earl's Court, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 72%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 9%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Earl's Court is within about a quarter of a mile of the Nevern Square Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Earl's Court fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
Garden Lodge, about 0.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If you live in a flat close to West Brompton station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Near listed buildings like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, less than half a mile west of the centre of Earl's Court, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

All about wall beds
Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Is bespoke worth it?
Standard units seldom reach the ceiling or fit wall to wall. We can build to the full height and width and fill the rest of the wall with storage. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Questions we are often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Earl's Court?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit wall beds to the uneven walls of an older house in Earl's Court?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
How are wall beds priced?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, get in touch through our contact form.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you use our contact form.
