About our fitted cupboards in Gillette Corner
We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. Most enquiries start with floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Gillette Corner, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and fitted cupboards are made to suit it.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
There is a place for both. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is awkward, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is usually the better answer. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Questions from Gillette Corner
I live near Syon Lane station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Gillette Corner?
Yes, Gillette Corner is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hounslow and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
What are the cupboards made of?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in the colour agreed with you.
Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?
Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
Honest limits
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician
- Any gas work around the boiler
- Wiring for lights or sockets
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Flats, conversions and lettings
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
