What we don’t do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Building work to make a wall sound

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

About our wall beds in Gillette Corner

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a hobby room with a bed for guests and shelves or a desk around the bed.

A good part of the housing around Gillette Corner is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Your questions about wall beds in Gillette Corner

Can you make wall beds for a home in Gillette Corner?

Yes. Gillette Corner is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Gillette Corner?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure and plan the layout around it.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Gillette Corner homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Gillette Corner were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 51%) and since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 21 entries within half a mile of the centre of Gillette Corner. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Gillette Corner fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Boston Manor, about 0.7 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Living in a block of flats near Syon Lane station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to. We also check there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it, for you to look over.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Do you need wall beds in Gillette Corner?

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed

If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
