Fitted cupboards for homes in Kidbrooke

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors often slope. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. If you are living with storage in a corner nothing else fits and tall cupboards where space is short, fitted cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Around Kidbrooke, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the design.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Kidbrooke

Does a conservation area in or near Kidbrooke affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Kidbrooke station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Do not store things against the boiler
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Mention any parking or lift rules

We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. If a door catches, it’s normally a small hinge adjustment.

Tell us about parking and access during the design visit. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How big the furniture is

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Before the design visit

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Where other trades come in

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Moving gas or electricity meters
  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it’s finished before fitting day.

Shelves

We plan shelf heights around what you’ll store, whether that is linen or cleaning things. Wide shelves are made stiff enough not to sag.

Storage in Kidbrooke homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Kidbrooke were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 60%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 13%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Kidbrooke is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 43% of households in the streets around Kidbrooke live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Close to Eltham Common? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Coronet Cinema, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Kidbrooke station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
