Fitted cupboards for homes in Woolwich
Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. If your home has a utility room with proper storage and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a block, the lift, the corridors and the door to the flat set the size of each section. Most households around Woolwich live in purpose-built flats, so the sections for fitted cupboards are planned during the design visit. Common parts are protected while the pieces come in.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
- First, you let us know about the room and what it needs.
- The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
- A quote in writing is sent to you.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop.
- We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.
Before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Arranging a design visit

More for homes in Woolwich
Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Fitted cupboards in Woolwich: local notes
In the streets around Woolwich, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 31%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Woolwich, Historic England’s list includes Woolwich Town Hall (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Granada Cinema (Grade II*), under half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. That typically means a van in Woolwich needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know about parking near your home at the measuring visit.

- Making good walls after other work
- Electrical work inside the cupboard
- Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer

Tips worth knowing
Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
- Let us know about parking during the design visit
- Make a note of what needs a home
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you, so the space keeps working.
It helps to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, and knowing this early saves changes later.
Questions from Woolwich
Is Woolwich in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?
Yes, we work across Greenwich, Woolwich included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Woolwich?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?
Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That is one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
