Fitted cupboards in Westcombe Park, Greenwich

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted cupboards for homes in Westcombe Park, each designed at a visit to your home.

Fitted cupboards for your home in Westcombe Park

Fitted cupboards in Westcombe Park

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. Typical reasons to get in touch are floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Around Westcombe Park, many homes were built since 2000, so spaces like that are worth a second look. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made cupboards are typically made from chipboard with a printed or plastic finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, so the finish can match the room. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often doesn’t get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Westcombe Park?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Westcombe Park is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour agreed with you.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Westcombe Park homes and fitted cupboards

Homes built before 1919 make up about 37% of the housing in the area around Westcombe Park, with about 37% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Westcombe Park is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 49% of households in the neighbourhood around Westcombe Park live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For an older house near St George's Church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. For a family home near Halstow Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Living in a block of flats near Westcombe Park station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

When you need someone else

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Making good walls after other work
  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • Wiring for lights or sockets

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

In a narrow hallway, the way doors open matters, so nothing blocks the way.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
