About our fitted cupboards in Coldharbour
A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. If you’re living with storage for towels and bedding and tall cupboards where space is short, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
An interwar house typically has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. Around Coldharbour, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What fitted cupboards can’t fix
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Building work or structural changes
- Connecting appliances to water or waste
- Relocating meters or the fuse board
Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Arranging a design visit
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Coldharbour
What you pay depends on:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking near your home
- The internal fittings
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit.
What to send when you contact us
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Your postcode and the borough
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
Materials and finishes
Shelves
Shelves are spaced to suit what goes on them, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Wide shelves are made stiff enough not to sag.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look that suits period homes. You choose the paint colour.
FAQs: fitted cupboards in Coldharbour
I live near Mottingham station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Coldharbour?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Coldharbour homes and fitted cupboards
In the neighbourhood around Coldharbour, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Coldharbour is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Coldharbour joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If you live in a period home close to St Alban, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. Close to Elmstead Wood? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. Near listed buildings like Geffery' s Homes (Almshouses), under half a mile north-west of the centre of Coldharbour, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
