How we make fitted cupboards for Tolworth
We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it is trimmed to the walls so there are no awkward gaps. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. Typical reasons to get in touch are boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Tolworth, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Fitted cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, and the space around them is often wasted. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, so less space goes to waste. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Questions we’re often asked
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Tolworth?
Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Tolworth included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do you cover homes near Tolworth station?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?
Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away without getting in the way of access. Moving them is not our work; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Tolworth
Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They aren’t much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, and that shapes the design. Doors, panels and ventilation are planned around them.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
- Storage for towels and bedding
- Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
- A cupboard for the meters with easy access
If you live in a flat close to Tolworth station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
What to check before you book
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Making use of awkward spaces in Tolworth
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Tolworth were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 75%) and since 2000 (about 8%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Kingston upon Thames included. Vans bringing furniture to Tolworth fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The width and height of the space
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.
