Monkhams Fitted Cupboards

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted cupboards in Monkhams starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitted cupboards in Monkhams: what you get

Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are cupboards for a utility or boot room and landing shelves for bedding and towels.

An interwar house normally has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Monkhams, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Why bespoke in Monkhams?

A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to leave gaps. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why choose us

  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Monkhams

Most people come to us because things have nowhere to go. Coats pile up on the newel post, shoes gather by the door and the vacuum lives in a corner. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and leaves the room around it clear.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Using the full height of a room
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear

Close to The Highams Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

For a smooth, even look, spray painting is a good choice, and it is done before the cupboards reach your home.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish, and the moisture-resistant grade copes with damper spots.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Monkhams?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Monkhams is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Highams Park station?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. Moving them is not our work, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.

What are the cupboards made of?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
