Monkhams TV and Media Units

Built-in TV walls and media cabinets, for homes in Monkhams. After a design visit and a quote in writing, it is made at our workshop and fitted in your home.

  • Wasted space around the screen
  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, with the weight spread across shelves.

How we make TV and media units for Monkhams

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. Most enquiries start with alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and speakers muffled behind doors, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Monkhams, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls in houses of that age are typically straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Your questions about TV and media units in Monkhams

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Monkhams?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Monkhams is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Highams Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The time on site depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

How do I get a quote?

Just drop us a line using the contact form. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, followed by a written quote.

Why bespoke in Monkhams?

Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Living-room storage in Monkhams

In the neighbourhood around Monkhams, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Monkhams. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Near listed buildings like Main Quadrangle, under half a mile north of the centre of Monkhams, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to Wells Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Configuring the TV and sound system

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.
