What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

Arranging a design visit

Advice

About our fitted cupboards in Old Town

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Most enquiries start with boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large number of homes around Old Town date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight, so the hallway still feels open.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

The usual reason is simple: there is too much stuff and not enough storage. Coats pile up on the newel post, shoes gather by the door and the vacuum lives in a corner. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and clears the floor.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels

If your children go to The Minster Nursery and Infant School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • How square the room is
  • The internal fittings
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Your postcode and the borough

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Fitted storage in Old Town

In the area around Old Town, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Old Town, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Old Town is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 3 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St John the Baptist, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Old Town, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Old Town

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Old Town?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live near West Croydon station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It’s one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

What are the cupboards made of?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
