Old Town Fitted Home Offices
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted home offices for homes in Old Town, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A desk buried under papers
- A tangle of chargers and leads
- A screen that is hard to read by the window
Need fitted home offices in Old Town?
Fitted home offices in Old Town: what you get
Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. A desk under a sloping ceiling needs careful planning so you can sit and stand comfortably. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. At the design visit in Old Town, we’ll see what fits. If your home has a corner too odd for a standard desk and work things on show in the evening, that is what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Some newer homes have a landing or stair space wide enough for a small desk. Many homes around Old Town date from 2000 onwards. A desk like that suits occasional work, with closed storage to keep it tidy. Any cables are routed neatly to the nearest sockets.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Old Town
Is Old Town in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes, Old Town is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Old Town?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Which materials go into your home offices?
Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Long shelves are sized to carry books and files without sagging. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you fit sockets in the desk?
Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.
From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Home offices are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it is in.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, and go through the design. It helps to tell us about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- We send a quote in writing.
- We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Advice
Caring for painted furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Think about glare on your screen
- Choose a calm colour for a working room
- Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
- Let us know about parking near your home
Wiping the desk and fronts with a soft, damp cloth is usually all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge of the desk picks up marks first.
Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. We size shelves for what you told us they’d carry. Spread heavy books and files evenly.
Flats, leases and landlords
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
Old Town homes and fitted home offices
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Old Town were built since 2000 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 31%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Old Town include Parish Church of St John the Baptist (Grade I), under half a mile south-west, and Old Palace Croydon: Chapel (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Newer homes are more common around Old Town than across Croydon: about 42% date from 2000 onwards, against about 15%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.
If you live near Duppas Hill, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. For a family home near The Minster Nursery and Infant School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. If you live in a period home close to Croydon Minster, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.
Old Town is about 2 miles north of Thornton Heath, part of the London Borough of Croydon. From period terraces to newer flats in Old Town, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our Croydon coverage includes Old Town and the places around it.

Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Installing IT equipment or broadband
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Changes to the structure of the house
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How it is made
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting on site lets the office be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It’s easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.
Doors and drawer fronts
Cupboard doors hide the clutter of working life. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. When you finish, the doors close on work.
