About our fitted wardrobes in Old Town

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. Typical reasons to get in touch are condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and space under the eaves going to waste, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many newer homes have tall windows or full-height glazing in the bedroom, which leaves fewer walls for storage. That’s worth planning for around Old Town, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, so we make the most of the walls you have. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Advice

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. It is easy to touch up later, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Old Town

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in Old Town. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

How do I get a quote?

Just message us from the contact page. It is useful to send rough sizes and a few photos, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Old Town homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Old Town were built since 2000 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 31%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Old Town, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Croydon are set locally. If your street in Old Town is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Addington Palace, about 3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. For a family home near The Minster Nursery and Infant School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. For an older house near Croydon Minster, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
