Common questions about fitted cupboards

My home in Waddon is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Waddon?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Waddon included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

What are the cupboards made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in the colour agreed with you.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How we make fitted cupboards for Waddon

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in a colour agreed with you. We make fitted cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a cupboard for the meters with easy access and storage for towels and bedding.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the awkward spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted cupboards are designed for the space you have. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice

Fitted storage in Waddon

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Waddon were built before 1919 (about 29%) and since 2000 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Waddon. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Croydon has its own. Depending on your street in Waddon, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Close to Duppas Hill? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. For an older house near Church of St George, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. Near listed buildings like Airport House, about 0.6 miles south-west of the centre of Waddon, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Measure the route into the room not just the room
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, especially on a colder external wall. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
