The problems wall beds solve
Lots of spare rooms have become home offices. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a fold-down bed lets it do both.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- A playroom that can sleep visitors
- Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
- A studio that works by day and night
- A spare room that’s rarely slept in
Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St John the Baptist, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Old Town, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
What to check before you book
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
About our wall beds in Old Town
Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. If you’re living with a living room with a bed that folds away and a bed that fills a little-used room, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Many homes around Old Town were built since 2000, and newer homes rarely have enough built-in storage for a bedroom. We design wall beds around the window, the radiator and the door. Where the flat is in a managed block, check the rules on deliveries and lifts before fitting day.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Bedrooms in Old Town: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 42% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Old Town, with about 31% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 40 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Old Town. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. About 42% of homes in the neighbourhood around Old Town were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.
For families living near The Minster Nursery and Infant School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. For an older house near Croydon Minster, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Questions from Old Town
Do you make wall beds for homes in Old Town?
Yes, we work across Croydon, Old Town included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Old Town?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
What does a wall bed cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Will a wall bed work on my wall?
That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it during the design visit.
Do you supply the mattress?
What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.
Can a wall bed have storage around it?
Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.
How it’s made
Shelves
We can add shelving around the bed for books, boxes or display.
Bed mechanism housing
The bed sits inside a cabinet built around its mechanism and fix it as the maker specifies. The front can look like a set of cupboards.
Pricing wall beds in Old Town
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How big the furniture is
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
What we need to know
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Examples of the look you’re after
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
How fitting works for wall beds
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.
- You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
- At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
- We send a quote in writing.
- In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level.
Preparing the room
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.
