Fitted cupboards in Gipsy Hill

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. Typical reasons to get in touch are boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Homes from the 1950s and 1960s typically have plain, regular rooms, which suits fitted storage with clean lines. Around Gipsy Hill, many homes were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. We still measure everything, as no room is perfectly square.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so it’s useful to tell us at the design visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Gipsy Hill?

Yes, Gipsy Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lambeth and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Gipsy Hill?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.

How long does fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Gipsy Hill

Most people come to us because things have nowhere to go. Coats pile up on the newel post, shoes gather by the door and the vacuum lives in a corner. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and leaves the room around it clear.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A neat cupboard around the boiler
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway

If you live near Long Meadow, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the quote be in writing?

How to choose a carpenter in London

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Making good walls after other work

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitted storage in Gipsy Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Gipsy Hill were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and before 1919 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Gipsy Hill Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Gipsy Hill. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. All of London, Lambeth included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Gipsy Hill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Subway, under half a mile east of the centre of Gipsy Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 0.5 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Gipsy Hill is in the London Borough of Lambeth, about 3 miles north-west of Stockwell. Anywhere in Gipsy Hill, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Lambeth, large and small.

We work across SE19, SE27 and SE21 for fitted cupboards. Whether you live on a street such as Dover Road, Gipsy Road and Berry Lane or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for fitted cupboards. Across the rest of Lambeth, our area takes in Stockwell (3 miles north-west), Kennington (4 miles north), Streatham (2 miles west), North Brixton (4 miles north), Little Portugal (4 miles north-west) and Clapham (4 miles north-west).

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Deal with any damp walls first

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can usually be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. It’s worth keeping a record of the colour.

It is useful to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, and knowing this early saves changes later.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
