Fitted cupboards for your home in Sydenham

Fitted cupboards for homes in Sydenham

Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors often slope. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are tidying away the gas and electricity meters and a utility room with proper storage.

A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so the design uses drawers, lids or shelves to bring things within reach. For a home in Sydenham, what works depends on how deep and how tall the space is. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we have agreed.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

These details are what make a cupboard look part of an older house.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood suits carcasses that carry a lot of weight, like those in a utility room.

How we price fitted cupboards

The price for your room depends on:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The width and height of the space

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • How you want to use the space
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions from Sydenham

I live near Sydenham station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Sydenham?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Fitted cupboards in Sydenham: local notes

About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Sydenham went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Sydenham is within about a quarter of a mile of the Sydenham Thorpes Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 40% of homes in the area around Sydenham were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses of that age have plenty of recesses, from hallway nooks to alcoves, and walls that are rarely straight.

For families living near Kirkdale School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. For a flat near Sydenham station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Sydenham

Hiding a boiler or a set of meters is a common reason to call. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, and that shapes the design. Doors, panels and ventilation are planned around them.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

Close to Mayow Park? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
