Built-in bookshelves for your home in Picketts Lock
Living-room storage in Picketts Lock
In the neighbourhood around Picketts Lock, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 27%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Picketts Lock is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Picketts Lock joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
Close to Pymmes Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a flat near Ponders End station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Picketts Lock is about 1 mile west of Edmonton, part of the London Borough of Enfield. Wherever you are in Picketts Lock, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Enfield, large and small.
In N9, E4 and N18, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Ardra Road, Goodwin Road and Hennessy Road, along with the roads around them, for built-in bookshelves and any of our other fitted furniture. Picketts Lock sits close to the A1037. Close by, we also work in Chingford Mount (1 mile south-east), South Chingford (1 mile south), Chingford (1 mile east), Edmonton (1 mile west) and Ponders End (1 mile north-west). Elsewhere in Enfield, we also cover Enfield (3 miles north-west), Palmers Green (3 miles west), New Southgate (5 miles west), Enfield Chase (3 miles north-west), Bush Hill Park (2 miles north-west) and Upper Edmonton (2 miles south-west).

Built-in bookshelves in Picketts Lock: what you get
Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. We fix built-in bookshelves to sound walls with fixings that suit how the wall is built. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it is best put right before fitting. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves that suit a period room and books with nowhere left to go.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the walls behind built-in bookshelves could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, then choose the fixings. If your room has a chimney breast, the alcoves are an obvious place for built-in bookshelves; if not, a full wall works well.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Questions we are often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Picketts Lock?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Picketts Lock?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
What materials do you use?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. The materials are named in your written quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Pricing built-in bookshelves in Picketts Lock
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- The width and height of the space
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How many doors and drawers there are
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Getting in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits shelving in period rooms. The colour is agreed with you, and refreshing it later is straightforward.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.
Where other trades come in
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Plumbing work around the shelves
- Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
- Decorating the rest of the room

How fitting day works
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.
- You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
- The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
