How we make fitted cupboards for Pollards Hill

Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, alongside spaces for the washing machine and dryer you choose. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. People usually come to us about a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and a linen cupboard on the landing; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. Around Pollards Hill, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Making use of tricky spaces in Pollards Hill

About 43% of the homes in the streets around Pollards Hill went up before 1919, and about 34% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Pollards Hill, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Terraced houses are home to about 31% of households in the streets around Pollards Hill, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses often have narrow halls and recesses where a shallow fitted cupboard helps.

For a flat near Norbury station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Norbury Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, and the space around them is often wasted. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, so less space goes to waste. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Norbury station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Pollards Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Spray painting or hand painting

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you contact us

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Measure the route into the room as well as the room
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it’s worth doing before the design is agreed.
