Built-in bookshelves in Pollards Hill

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Pollards Hill

We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Pollards Hill. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are low shelves children can reach and bare walls that could hold shelving.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Pollards Hill, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Questions we are often asked

Is Pollards Hill in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, Pollards Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Norbury station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, so many people mix depths. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. The openings are measured when we visit.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, so they can match the walls or stand out. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Pollards Hill

A move into a period home often prompts it. Alcoves and chimney breasts make natural places for books.

Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:

  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Space for art books and records
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Books piled on the floor

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Norbury Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure

How to choose a carpenter in London

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Pollards Hill

In the neighbourhood around Pollards Hill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Pollards Hill. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Pollards Hill (about 43%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving.

Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Grangewood Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
