Bespoke kitchens for homes in Pollards Hill

Homes built before 1919 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around Pollards Hill, with about 34% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Pollards Hill. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. All of London, Croydon included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Pollards Hill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

For a family home near Kensington Avenue Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. Near listed buildings like Norbury Hall, less than half a mile west of the centre of Pollards Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Pollards Hill is in the London Borough of Croydon, about 1 mile south of Thornton Heath. Anywhere in Pollards Hill, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Croydon, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Here we cover the CR7, SW16 and SE19 postcode area for bespoke kitchens. You’ll find streets here such as Green Lane, Croft Road and Downs Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. Close by, we also work in Norbury (1 mile north), Thornton Heath (1 mile south), Streatham (2 miles north-west), Streatham Park (2 miles north-west) and Mitcham (2 miles west). We also make bespoke kitchens in nearby places such as Croydon (3 miles south), Coulsdon (7 miles south), Purley (5 miles south), Broad Green (2 miles south), Selhurst (2 miles south-east) and South Norwood (2 miles south-east).

How we make bespoke kitchens for Pollards Hill

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen that fits an uneven room and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Pollards Hill, walls tend to be truer than in older houses, though nothing is assumed. Cabinets are scribed where needed and levelled on site. Gas work is for a Gas Safe engineer, and the plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What we don’t do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Plastering, tiling or decorating
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker
  • Plumbing, which is for your plumber

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What to send when you get in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

Some want a kitchen that suits a period house. A painted kitchen with a dresser can feel at home in an older room and look as if they belong.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • A kitchen island with room around it

Living in a block of flats near Norbury station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You let us know about the room and how you use it. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.

Before we arrive

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, message us from the contact page.

Questions from Pollards Hill

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Norbury station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Pollards Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on.
