Upper Walthamstow Fitted Wardrobes

In Upper Walthamstow, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. We design your fitted wardrobe at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Not enough hanging space

How we make fitted wardrobes for Upper Walthamstow

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there is height and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns an awkward corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about empty alcoves in the bedroom and space under the eaves going to waste.

Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. Your home in Upper Walthamstow could be either, or something in between. Each is measured and fitted in its own way. Ceiling height sets how tall the furniture can go.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Upper Walthamstow

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upper Walthamstow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live in a flat in Upper Walthamstow. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, as long as it is ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom normally needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

If you live near Lloyd Park, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

How to get a quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.

Advice

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

Upper Walthamstow homes and fitted wardrobes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 40% of the housing in the area around Upper Walthamstow, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 12 entries within half a mile of the centre of Upper Walthamstow. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Purpose-built flats are home to about 40% of households in the streets around Upper Walthamstow, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter in the Forest, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Walthamstow House (Corpus Christi School), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
