Ask about TV and media units in Blackfriars
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. In a flat with stairs or a small lift, large flat-pack units can be hard to get in, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections sized for the way in. It is then assembled in the room.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
Why us?
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- More than 300 projects completed
- Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement

TV and media units in Blackfriars
Everything starts with the screen. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy. Viewing height matters too: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a TV that looks out of place in the room and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard.
Concrete floors and ceilings are common in post-war blocks, and they need the right drill and fixings. With many homes around Blackfriars dating from the post-war decades, we check the walls at the measuring visit before TV and media units are designed. Where a wall is a lightweight partition, heavy pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back for stability.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Do you need TV and media units in Blackfriars?
Others are tired of furniture that doesn’t fit. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Clutter around the TV
- A big screen that dominates the wall
- Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
Living in a block of flats near London Blackfriars station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
What to check before you book
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
How fitting day works
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know ahead of time helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.
- You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
- We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
- We send a written quote.
- In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Getting a quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Your questions about TV and media units in Blackfriars
Does a conservation area in or near Blackfriars affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Blackfriars?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it. The whole City of London is also inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the ULEZ covers every London borough.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
It is made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
Can you plan for a future TV?
We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind so the unit suits your next set. Tell us the size you might move to during the design visit.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
TV and media units in Blackfriars: local notes
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 40% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Blackfriars, with about 27% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 395 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Blackfriars. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.
If you live near Bernie Spain Gardens, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For families living near Mercers' School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Where other trades come in
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
