Fitted furniture in EC1M

Fitted wardrobes across EC1M: what to expect

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. Most enquiries start with wardrobes that are full to bursting and storage boxes stacked under the bed, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

How our quotes work

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Why work with us

Starting with a design visit

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Bedroom storage across EC1M

Across EC1M, including Blackfriars, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.

In the EC1M postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 40% of homes in the EC1M postcode district were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are normally simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall. A quarter or more of the homes in EC1M (about 27%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both at the measuring visit.

Blackfriars: If your children go to Mercers' School or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Near listed buildings like Apothecaries Hall, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Blackfriars, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood helps keep them straight across wider sections.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They help before and after fitting:

  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then to keep them running smoothly. Do not let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in EC1M

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To get started, use our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in EC1M

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns tricky space into storage.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.

What are your fitted wardrobes made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in EC1M?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, EC1M included.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

It’s worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
