Walk-in Wardrobes in Chelsfield

In Chelsfield, we design walk-in wardrobes around the room you actually have. Your walk-in wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Chelsfield

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. Typical reasons to get in touch are a use for a small spare room and the right mix of long and short hanging, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars usually has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Chelsfield, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What affects the price in Chelsfield

The price for your room depends on:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How many doors and drawers there are

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers, including any dressing table.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build everything in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Chelsfield

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Chelsfield affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

There’s no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we will talk it through during the design visit.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

For a family home near Chelsfield Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. The wider area includes historic houses such as Lullingstone Castle, about 3 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. Close to Hewitt's Chalk Bank? Why bespoke in Chelsfield?

There’s a place for both. For a simple space, off-the-shelf can do the job. For awkward rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
