Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hampton Wick

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. If you’re living with clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and mismatched bedroom furniture, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, bedrooms range from box rooms to large rooms with bays and sloping ceilings. Fitted wardrobes can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Nothing is assumed to be square, so the room is measured carefully.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Hampton Wick

A move is a common trigger. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Too little room for clothes
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

If your children go to St John the Baptist Church of England Junior School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Hampton Wick

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Hampton Wick?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Does a conservation area in or near Hampton Wick affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to send us a few details through our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood, so they hold their shape.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Decorating or plastering the room

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Let us know about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Why bespoke in Hampton Wick?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why work with us in Hampton Wick

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us

Fitted bedroom furniture in Hampton Wick

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hampton Wick were built before 1919 (about 37%) and since 2000 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 15 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Hampton Wick. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are more common around Hampton Wick than across Kingston upon Thames: about 46% of households, against about 30%, based on Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

Close to Canbury Gardens? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. For an older house near All Saints Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
