Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

TV and media units in Gordon Hill

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places. That is work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in. People usually come to us about empty alcoves beside the TV and boxes and consoles on the floor, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Post-war houses often have a through lounge or a living room with a wide window at one end. Around Gordon Hill, many homes come from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so TV and media units are often planned to give the room a focal point. Low cupboards with shelves over them can sit beside or below the window.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Your questions about TV and media units in Gordon Hill

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Gordon Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

I live near Gordon Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it is in, don’t block the gaps.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Screen sizes change, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can leave room for a larger screen, so the unit lasts longer. In a plain post-war room, standalone pieces stand proud of the wall with nothing to frame them, whereas fitted furniture can make its own recesses and frame a window or door.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that aren’t straight, closing the gaps.

Shelves

Each shelf is planned for what will sit on it, with space around for air.

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

TV and media units in Gordon Hill: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 30% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Gordon Hill, with about 25% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 22 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Gordon Hill. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For families living near St Michael's CofE Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near Enfield Town Park, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. Near listed buildings like St Faith's Cottage, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Gordon Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
