Oakthorpe Park Fitted Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Oakthorpe Park, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • No space in front for doors to swing

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Wardrobe shelves can carry more weight than you’d think. Birch plywood helps keep them straight across wider sections.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It’s a sensible choice against a colder external wall.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Oakthorpe Park

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. Most enquiries start with gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Older bedrooms typically have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Oakthorpe Park date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Bedroom storage in Oakthorpe Park

Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Enfield sets its own rules. If your street in Oakthorpe Park is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Close to Broomfield Park? Fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If you live in a period home close to St Michael-at-Bowes, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Oakthorpe Park is about 2 miles east of Edmonton, within the London Borough of Enfield. Whether your home in Oakthorpe Park is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. In Enfield, Oakthorpe Park is one of the places we cover.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Oakthorpe Park

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Oakthorpe Park

Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces, and everything has a place behind it.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom

If you live in a flat close to Palmers Green station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Oakthorpe Park

Is Oakthorpe Park in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. Oakthorpe Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it, which helps avoid condensation.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then so the doors run smoothly. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so tell us at the design visit if you need to store something heavy.
